On behalf of the Father Bressani Catholic High School community, we express our deepest sorrow for the heartrending loss of the 215 children at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia. Along with members of our Catholic community, we acknowledge the genocide of First People children and will endeavor to work towards reconciliation by putting words into action.
The news of the recent discovery is shocking. As a community, we too add our voices to those who mourn, who stand with all families who have lost children. We are committed to rebuild and reconcile the relationship with First People communities, it is crucial that First People histories and perspectives continue to be taught. We do this by engaging with community partners and by continuing to support the delivery of First People education in an inclusive and equitable manner.
We will stand in solidarity with the First Peoples in our community and across our nation as we grieve because “Every Child Matters.” As a symbol of our collective grief, we have lowered our flag. As well, students and staff were encouraged to wear orange on Thursday, June 3rd. As we see over more clearly the pain and suffering of the past, our community pledges to continue walking side by side with Indigenous Peoples in the present, seeking greater healing and reconciliation for the future.
We lift up prayers to the Lord for the 215 children who have lost their lives. We pray for these souls that were taken from their families and taken from our world. We pray for truth, reconciliation and healing. May our Creator God bless all of us with consolation and hope.
