Experiential Learning Goes Virtual In Business Studies

With COVID-19, back to school took on a different meaning where online learning, cohorts, masks, social distancing, and limited extracurriculars became the new normal. With learning taking on a new form, a group of Fr. Bressani students were bound and determined to adapt this virtual model to facilitate participation in extracurriculars. From there came our first virtual DECA team with twelve eager students ready to embrace the opportunity to compete at the regional level in the areas of Business Management and Administration, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Finance, and Personal Financial Literacy. Weekly Google Meets, with myself as their DECA advisor, helped them to study for their online exams and prepare for their virtual oral competitive events. Over time, friendships were formed, leadership skills were refined, and collaboration became the norm. The regional results were outstanding! All twelve students successfully advanced to compete at the provincial level in their respective competitive event or as a delegate for DECA’s Leadership Development Academy. With spirits high, the team returned to weekly Google Meets to refine their business knowledge and oral presentation skills for DECA Provincials. Once again, our Eagles soared! Three team members placed top 21 in their virtual oral events, one team member placed top 15 in their business cluster online exam, and one of our leadership delegates will be virtually representing Fr. Bressani at DECA Internationals in April. It is with great pleasure that I applaud their determination and achievements. They are a testament that anything is possible with hard work, determination, and adaptability.
